what does toothless like to eat? also, what do you like to eat? and i don't suppose you want to learn to build something? i never thanked you properly for the ride, so...
[ this video message has a woman you basically had sex with hiccup, hi hello. she's wearing red today, morgana is and and she's lounged on the couch in her apartment, all bare feet and red lips that he'll know a bit too well.
her smile is rather lazy ]
I meant what I said. I want to hear about the dragons.
[ this is a totally legit way to start a conversation ]
[Oh. OH. Does he remember the hot brunette whose breasts he might have felt up that one time? Hel yes, he does. Are his cheeks bursting into a red shade that could challenge the hue of her dress? Affirmative. But the red, by far, looks good on you, and he does his best to make sure his eyes don't wander all over the color too much.]
Oh, uh, did you? What would you wanna know? I mean, there's probably about a thousand different places I could start on that subject.
[This is dangerous territory, Morgana. He could go on for hours.]
hey listen maybe this is going to sound weird but i have this [this what, what is he?] friend and he's not going through a really great time right now because of reasons and i was wondering if you would mind meeting him? and introducing him to toothless?
he's a total nerd for history stuff i'm pretty sure it'll be cute hilarious but you can say no and i'll just point at you from afar
Sure! Go right ahead. Nothing weird about it. I mean of COURSE anybody would be pretty psyched to meet a dragon. It'll cheer him right up. No doubt about it.
Halibut? No one in their right mind would name someone Halibut. And as a Viking, I've heard some pretty rough naming results. Even Snotlout sounds better than Halibut.
[SEEMS LIKE YOU REACHED ANOTHER DEAD END, HUH, DICK? Nah, but wait - ]
[ Christmas morning there is a brown-wrapped, plain package tied with a green bow on Hiccup's bed. The tag reads BELIEVE IN UR ROOTS!! --YOUR FAVE GOD, LOKI XOXO and inside is a fitting gift. There is also a huge, magically enlarged/durable chew toy for Toothless.
Giving presents out for a monotheistic holiday seems like the thing to do when no one expects it of him, and so. ]
[ katniss had only just realized what peeta meant to her when he left, so the idea of giving away her heart is pretty new. a whole holiday surrounding it seems - weird.
nevertheless, hiccup will find a box with one of these in it outside his door.
there's no note because she started and threw out literally five false starts. sorry, hiccup! ]
[He takes some time to consider that it might be from someone else. But instincts tell him that it's only one of two people who left these here, notably the ones that live within the house. Except Jack shared a room with him so if it had been a gift from him, it'd be on his bed rather than his door.
That leaves the only option left. Which is surprising. But all the same, sweet. Case closed, Katniss.]
[ like Katniss, Hiccup gets his first gift of that god-awful apron much earlier on Valentine's Day than he gets his next. and in the late evening, Jack is already blushing with the bruised coloring that Hiccup is familiar with, when he gives over the hand-carved lovespoon. it's thin but solid, with hearts and a snowflake pattern chiselled out of it, and decorative engravings; a dotted outline, a tree in the middle, and a dragon on the back of the spoon's bowl.
he downplays the gift almost as immediately as he explains it. that this one is probably kind of lame, but the tradition it's coming from is a good one, something old and Welsh; that they're gifts of sentiment, for luck and affection and whatever else. and that someone not an idiot, i.e. someone not Jack Frost, would have thought to put more time and effort into it, but he thought of it pretty last-minute and it's been a while since he even carved anything, so it's rushed and they make them way better in Wales anyway, you should see the ones they hand out there. that he can make a better one than this, seriously — he just didn't want to be that jerk with nothing to give back when he gets something on Valentine's Day.
the whole while, he paces and fidgets with the bracelet Hiccup gave him on his right wrist, restless with embarrassment and nerves. he'd never gotten gifts before coming to Eudio, but— he'd never really been able to give them, either. certainly not anything with real sentiment, and nothing where the recipient would even know it was from him. it's a strange new experience, one that catches in his throat. ]
[He expects the more joking gift, though he'd really hoped that Jack hadn't been serious about giving it to him (but apparently that was wishful thinking and Hiccup has to fight his inner conflict of wanting to shove and hide the thing somewhere immediately and not wanting to make Jack feel bad about it despite the purposeful pranking behind it).
But with one gift, it throws him off into not expecting the second at all, holding the carved wood in his hand with blinking eyes. It's well-done; Hiccup especially knows that as someone who's spent quite a bit of time doing designs of his own. But it isn't the nice craftsmanship that makes him blush a flushing red that highlights the freckles over his cheeks. It's that Jack made this. He made it for him.
When he looks up at the boy, he notices the bracelet immediately, a twitch of a smile rising from knowing that Jack's willing to wear it. Spoon spinning in his fingers, he tilts his head, leaning forward to rest a hand on a bicep, over a hoodie.]
You know, I was saying I needed something to help drink my soup. This comes in perfect time! [Ahahaha, jokes .....]
[ the pacing stops short at Hiccup's hand reaching out for him, and then the joke, Jack going still and just staring for a moment. it's hard not to overthink reactions to a gift like this — something personal but utterly worthless aside from sentimental value, and coming from a tradition that he knows is both dated and not particularly widespread. every response can be weighed and measured for something negative, for disappointment or indifference, and he's already expecting the worst out of a defensive instinct, it's not hard to find an indication of something bad.
the stupid joke, though — that's such a typical Hiccup thing to say. it loosens some of the nervous tension in Jack's chest, only helped by the gentle press of touch on his arm. he smiles, a little wan but no less genuine, and then ducks his head with a soft huff of laughter, bare toes scuffing the floor. ]
Yeah, well, I didn't want you drinking straight out of the bowl like a barbarian.
