[What's hotter than a lovely brunette flirting with him? A lovely brunette flirting with him and wanting to talk about dragons. True enough, the last time this exactly scenario happened, that particular brunette had ulterior motives and practically sold him out to his enemies, but Hiccup's never been quite good at learning his lessons.
She's asking for details, all too willing to listen and he has to shift to sit up on his own couch because he's all too willing to share.]
O-okay, then to start at the beginning, uh ... well, it's probably hard to talk about where it all started since most archives just talk about dragons being cruel and vicious, that all we needed to know if that they were dangerous and needed to be killed on sight. See, most dragon herds have an alpha that they follow, a large dragon that's gained the trust of all other dragons. But if there isn't an alpha to follow, there's a queen who normally doesn't quite have the level of power an alpha has, but still enough to force dragons to follow her will.
[He edges forward on the couch as he leans over the table that he sets the phone on, angling it to face him as he begins to sketch something quickly on a sheet of paper. Holding it up for her to see, it's a quick, messier sketch of Berk and some of the surrounding lands in the distance.]
See, this is my island. We're pretty well secluded, but — [He points out to the left side of the paper.] Over here was a giant dragon called the Red Death. She had most of the dragons in this area under her control and had them attacking our village for ages, stealing our food and supplies to feed herself. We never realized they were under this harsh control, so Vikings constantly fought them off to defend themselves, resulting in that long, endless war. Up until I met Toothless and we found out what the whole situation really was.
Yeah, dragons have their own unique noises that even the different species can understand between each other. Though each species also do have their own particular dragon calls in order to reach out to their own kind from further away.
[Reasons they know that Toothless is the only one of his kind, considering there never seems to be a response to his calls.]
They actually can understand certain parts of our language, mostly in the way that they'd understand certain words and sounds. I can shout out Plasma Blast and Toothless'll always know what I'm talking about. A lot of times they can recognize expressions and gestures too. It's sort of a way that they end up having an understanding of their trainer's moods — when they're excited, when they're angry, when they're sad, all of that.
[He laughs a bit nervously when he notices himself rambling a bit, chewing on his lip as he scratches at his neck.] Uh, yeah, Toothless, he — well, he has these retractable teeth so that's kind of where it came from. He and I, we've been together for years so we're crazy familiar with each other's sounds and movements, always on the same page together. It's a really big trust thing, mostly.
[ if he rambles, morgana doesn't seem to notice. instead, green eyes go widewide at his tales and explanations of the nature of dragons, of their communities and their intelligence. they become a little dimmer when she thinks that her own kingdom had done to dragons in the days of old. she listens to each word and then offers him a little smile. ]
You were equally fortunate, you and him, to have found each other.
[He appreciates how much she listens, especially since he does get rather homesick at times. It's good to have Toothless with him, very good, but he's still accustomed to being in a world surrounded by thousands of dragons that suddenly being in a world with only one isn't quite the same.
But she's sweet to let him ramble, a warming upward twist of his lips into a grateful smile slipping with his words.] Yeah, it's been really great. I've never been happier.
[He huffs a laugh, tilting his chin up at her.]
So you seem to be really fascinated by this whole dragon thing. You really interested in them?
[ it's not a sufficient answer but it'll take her another moment to put her thoughts into words. it's not that morgana met many dragons, or any at all but that dragons, much like people of magic, feel like a sort of kin to her. a kin that was taken away from her by uther, yes, but a kin still, a being of an old world that's quite gone. ]
they once roamed in my realm; but no longer.[ seb fjhff ]
[He actually quiets down upon hearing that, words caught in his throat. That's never the sort of thing he wanted to find out, but he wonders if it's inevitable. But no longer. His village might have befriended dragons, but there were still so many out there that would still go in for the kill, still so many that feared. It was likely the same was a fact in other worlds.]
[ not dragons, not men nor women nor children. not his own ward though morgana wants, at times, nothing more than to spit the truth in his face and be done with the whole thing. it would mean a sure death and the threat is enough to keep her silent.
[His shock only lasts momentarily. Because he understands; he's been there. It's hardly been five or six years since their war with the dragons had ended. And that was only Berk's war. Villages and tribes all over were still fighting, still believing them to be murderous creatures.
He frowns, running a hand through his hair.] It's not hopeless, you know. My dad, he was the chief, probably the most stubborn guy in the world, but his mind was changed. There's way to show people, to make them understand.
There is a difference, however, between stubborn and mad with hate.
[ there is an edge there. an old bitter anger that sits in her chest, usually asleep but every now and then, something wakes it, causes her gaze to harden. uther will never understand, not ever. she had seen too much death in her life to believe otherwise ]
Our king is blinded by it and he has the whole kingdom think anyone who has magic is evil.
[ and he will kill them all, every last one, including her. the thought is chilling ]
but - I know that one day there will be another king and I'm certain people will see that magic can be used for good.

everything.
[ which is unhelpful but she stretches a bit, pushes herself up to hum in thought ]
I want to know how it started, the war and why. and what they're like, how one comes to have such a connection with one, do they speak, do -

everything.

So they can talk among themselves?
[ curious ]
Can they understand our language at all?? How do you speak to - Toothless? Did you name him?
