[ like Katniss, Hiccup gets his first gift of that god-awful apron much earlier on Valentine's Day than he gets his next. and in the late evening, Jack is already blushing with the bruised coloring that Hiccup is familiar with, when he gives over the hand-carved lovespoon. it's thin but solid, with hearts and a snowflake pattern chiselled out of it, and decorative engravings; a dotted outline, a tree in the middle, and a dragon on the back of the spoon's bowl.
he downplays the gift almost as immediately as he explains it. that this one is probably kind of lame, but the tradition it's coming from is a good one, something old and Welsh; that they're gifts of sentiment, for luck and affection and whatever else. and that someone not an idiot, i.e. someone not Jack Frost, would have thought to put more time and effort into it, but he thought of it pretty last-minute and it's been a while since he even carved anything, so it's rushed and they make them way better in Wales anyway, you should see the ones they hand out there. that he can make a better one than this, seriously — he just didn't want to be that jerk with nothing to give back when he gets something on Valentine's Day.
