( general ) ☁ personality notes

- does his best to succeed as a Viking
becomes more determined to try to change Vikings than follow traditions

- almost obsessed with proving himself to the rest of his tribe
begins to fear his failures at being as great as his father, acts more independently

- more determined to gain the recognition of his peers than he is heedful of others' orders
still ignores others' orders, less for recognition, more for his own determinations

- first comes off as awkward, mainly because he's a poor fighter, and rather scrawny for a Viking
still awkward but less so due to increased confidence has proved himself as a fighter

- intelligent and is constantly creating inventions for various uses
(first film inventions: bola sling, a prosthetic tail, a saddle, and a riding vest)
(second film: custom stables, all you can eat feeding stations, a full-service dragon wash, top of the line fire prevention methods)
has become an even stronger blacksmith, creatures many useful mechanics for the village, plus his own flight suit

- often doesn't think things through
still acts primarily on impulse

- shows great aptitude at being a leader and a strategist
(leads his Dragon Training classmates into battle, using his friends' strengths wisely in the battle against the Red Death)
has grown to trust his friends' strengths to know when they can handle themselves

- has very good observational skills
still uses this to understand dragons, uses baby dragons to withstand the baddie alpha's command; has also been able to create contraptions using dragons' skills to gain their trust

- remains shy and secretive, preferring to be alone with Toothless
still prefers to be alone, keeps to himself; but will still take the opportunity to brag and show off

- unused to all the positive attention
"No, this was different. Not the standard run-for-the-hills hoo-ha I’ve come to enjoy."

- tends to be sarcastic with a dry sense of humor that can sometimes put him at odds with the other Vikings

- likes to hide his fear with said sarcasm and dry humor

- due to shyness, had a habit of stuttering and stammering when talking to some of the other Vikings
(especially Astrid or when his father was angry at him)
has become confident and slightly cocky at berk, but still shows that shyness in front of those he's still eager to impress like mom

- rather prone to letting his insecurities cloud his judgment and effect his actions
(his desperation for the acceptance of his tribe, and his father in particular, cause him to regularly try to kill dragons along with them, only to end up doing more harm then good due to his clumsiness)
(his mistaken belief that Stoick still does not accept him causes him to lead the other Vikings on a potentially dangerous treasure hunt to prove himself)
wanting to prove himself somehow, he tries to use diplomacy to show he can lead

- innate friendliness and tendency to give others the benefit of the doubt cause him to be a little too trusting of strangers
unless harm comes to others like toothless like with valka; but when toothless was back in his care, he was easy to trust

- leaves him vulnerable to manipulation and deceit by more dishonest characters, such as Heather and Mildew, on more then one occasion

- shows a more unlikable, competitive side of his personality as he begins to score victories over Snotlout (Thawfest)
still begins to showcase his competitive side, but doesn't take it to the extreme, such as still snatching the sheep in dragon racing, but giving the point to astrid

- since Hiccup is unaccustomed to winning anything, he handles it very badly, letting the glory go to his head to the point where he becomes just as arrogant and unpleasant as Snotlout
overcame this, but still sometimes gets overconfident in his abilities

- also prone to overconfidence in his ability as a diplomat due to being mostly successful so far
(a major catalyst of the second film's story line, as his total belief that he would be able to reason with Drago causes him to run away from Berk to confront the warlord)
(This indirectly leads to Stoick's death at the hands of Drago when he hypnotizes Toothless into attacking Hiccup to demonstrate the superiority of his philosophy over Hiccup's)

- is never above admitting when he is or has been in the wrong, and will do his best to make amends with others

- possesses a deep sense of compassion
(spares Toothless, and in doing so he changes the world of Vikings and dragons forever)
(shows great sympathy to Snotlout at the end of the Thawfest Games, giving up his own glory and fame for the sake of his friend)
(peak of Hiccup's sympathy is displayed in his releasing Mildew, the very man who had betrayed him, from an Outcast cell)
never truly blames toothless for the death of his father

- will almost never allow Toothless to use his full power against foes
(begs Toothless to spare a Whispering Death that had nearly killed both of them just moments earlier)
only uses toothless to destroy the dragon capturing contraptions in the first main battle

- is occasionally naïve in his sympathy
tries to reason with drago despite the warnings

- his kindheartedness has resulted in many a victory and accomplished the training of the most deadly dragon on the planet

- seems to harden in a difficult resolution (Drago; Alvin)
(Hiccup and Toothless even charged Alvin in an attempt to kill him after he had captured, threatened, and deeply insulted both of them)
gives drago the chance to try to make peace and eventually to surrender, but doesn't show mercy when villains take it to the extreme and greatly harm others

- is an intelligent, nice and likable person who is naturally bighearted and innocent

- has also gone from being a shy boy, to a confident young man, and "the greatest Dragon Master this world has ever seen."

- shown to care for his loved ones, especially Stoick, Valka, Toothless and Astrid
