BACKGROUND.

It all takes place in the isle of Berk, "twelve days north of hopeless, and a few degrees south of freezing to death" and "located solidly on the meridian of misery," as Hiccup once described it. It's where Vikings once fought dragons for centuries, braving through battle to protect their own despite the endless war of the so-called vile creatures terrorizing their land. That is, until Hiccup takes it upon himself to actually befriend one of these dragons instead of killing it (even giving him the name Toothless to just showcase that growing companionship), choosing to find more about their habits and ways of life which in turn teaches him that everything they once believed about them had been completely wrong. However, if there's one thing that Vikings are known for, it's their stubbornness. So even when he tries to convince the village, he gets pushed away, shunned for siding with their long sworned enemy, forced to hear his father, Stoick (who just so happens to also be the chief), utter to him: "You're not a Viking. You're not my son." In the end, it takes battling against the large terrorizing queen of the dragons' nest which threatens the lives of Viking and dragon alike to change that line of thinking. The battle costs Hiccup the loss of one of his legs (similar to Toothless' injury in missing a tail fin), but forces the Vikings to reconsider their war history and join together in living alongside dragons.

Five years pass and the lifestyle of Berk completely transforms from a constantly dreary warzone to something more positive as Hiccup's changes his tone to announcing that "life [there] is amazing, just not for the faint of heart." Because at this point, dragons have been integrated into the village's culture, now filled with energy and excitement as they enjoy things such as dragon racing and having these dragons living alongside them in their homes as pets. At this point, the village and Stoick have placed such a strong trust in Hiccup for transforming their world that he's been secured as next in line to become Chief of Berk. Except the one-legged Viking has been escaping his responsibilities, instead venturing the world to discover uncharted lands with Toothless. It's through his travels that he learns about Drago trying to bring together a dragon army and a mysterious dragon rider that has been trying to stop him. Wanting to try talking peace with Drago, Hiccup begins to clash heads with his father who insists they prepare for war. Yet habit has Hiccup ignoring the chief's orders, attempting to seek passage to see the dragon army's commander before once again getting stopped by Stoick who warns him of Drago's unrelenting need to take command of all dragons, willing to destroy anyone who steps in his path. Still not convinced, Hiccup escapes once again, where he meets the mysterious dragon rider who turns out to be his mother who has been living with dragons for 20 years after being kidnapped. Learning that his close connection to dragon stems from her side, Hiccup is thrilled to have her around, convinced that they could talk to Drago together before she protests just as his father did, insisting they instead had to do everything to protect the dragons. Yet, soon enough, Stoick appears to bring his son back home, reuniting with his estranged wife, allowing for a few moments of happiness where the family comes together, leaving Hiccup filled with a strong hope for the future.

But that carefree happiness is short lasting when they discover Drago's army has arrived. Going out into the battlefield, Hiccup guides Toothless into destroying as many dragon traps as they come across while the rest of their friends arrive to help. Still convinced he could end this war with talk, Hiccup finally confronts Drago, but his words fail to get across and instead backfire as Drago uses his Bewilderbeast, the new commanding Alpha of dragons, to put Toothless under his control. Having lost his free will, the Night Fury is directed to shoot an attack at Hiccup, but Stoick arrives just in time to protect his son from the blast, losing his life in the process. Completely distraught, Hiccup pushes Toothless away in anger before immediately regretting his actions when Drago uses the Night Fury to ride off to Berk. Afterwards, they hold a funeral for Stoick where Hiccup expresses his long lasting fear of never being able to have been as great of a chief, as great of a person, as his father, but regains his resolve when his mother tells him that Stoick had always believed in him since he was born. Deciding to use the dragon babies, the only dragons that cannot be controlled by the Alpha, to head back to Berk, Hiccup uses his words to get Toothless to come back to his senses, telling the dragon that he understands the attack hadn't been his fight, that the two still remained best friends. The depth of that friendship is enough to fight off the Alpha's control, leaving Hiccup prepared to fight off Drago and the Bewilderbeast. Using the strengths of their flying and training, they managed to separate their two enemies just before the Alpha entraps them in a blast of ice. However, resolved to protect his best friend, Toothless gains new stronger abilities, destroying the ice and stepping up to find the giant Bewilderbeast on his own, slowly convincing the controlled dragons to join in his battle. Proving himself as the new Alpha, Toothless harms and shames the large dragon just enough to have him give up and return to the waters, as Hiccup reminds Drago that the "alpha protects them all". With Berk cheering over their victory, a ritual proclaims Hiccup officially as the new Chief of Berk, which he accepts with a meek smile. As the Vikings are seen repairing the village back together, Hiccup speaks in a voice over of their stronger determination, that "[they] are the voice of peace. And bit by bit, [they] will change this world".

PERSONALITY.

When the world first meets Hiccup as a young teenager, he struggles with his confidence, has a reputation for his clumsiness, and will often act with good intentions that often end in disaster. Five years later, while the tendencies of his youth still seep out on occasion, the once "runt of the litter" Viking has grown into an assertive young man that now basks with dignity over his accomplishments of turning his once dragon-fighting village into one that trains and rides those very same dragons. Having constantly protected the Vikings and eased them into a new way of life that consists of peace and enjoyment, he's earned himself the title of the "Pride of Berk" and and cemented his future as the potential new chieftain, as insisted by Stoick.

The young Haddock has displayed plenty of examples of his capabilities at being a leader, as if his taking initiative in trying to understand dragons rather than fight them hadn't been enough to prove his nature of stepping up to challenges and producing positive change. He's also shown his efficiency in battle strategy, having known how to take on the Red Death those years ago as well as protecting the village from invaders over the years, and his ability to guide the other Vikings, relaying orders to his friends in the midst of battle and communicating with the villagers as they slowly adapted to learning to live alongside dragons.

There's just one major flaw: Hiccup doesn't actually want to take up that responsibility. Now that Berk has learned to adapt, he chooses to venture out with Toothless, flying out to travel towards very distant lands and uncharted territories to expand his map, rather than staying behind to deal with mundane tasks around the village and the pressures of his father ("All those speeches, and planning, and running the village ... that’s his thing."). He finds more pleasure in soaring through clouds, embracing the freedom of the skies, where he can't be held back by any boundaries, lingering in a more independent nature. The reality of his escapism is his uncertainty of who he really is. Having once been known as the village embarrassment that had wished nothing more than to just fit in with everyone else, he's only continued to learn how much he differs from the standard strong, brute Viking that he could never really be. In that, he fails to see any of his father in himself, refusing to believe that he could possibly ever take his place ("I’m not like you. You know exactly who you are. You always have. But ... I’m still looking. I know that I’m not my father ... and I never met my mother ... so, what does that make me?"). The only solution he has for himself is traveling and mapping the world, hoping he might find himself in the midst of it.

But if there's a trait that Hiccup shares with his father, which stands out more than most, it's his incredible stubbornness. Often clashing with Stoick's ideas, for instance, he doesn't hold back from showcasing his disagreements when someone presents contrasting opinions to his own. Headstrong and determined, Hiccup will argue and be quick to point out the faults and flaws against someone, especially in regards to fighting and war. Because of his successes in changing his father's and the village's views on dragons, Hiccup can be overconfident in his abilities of diplomacy, often believing that anything can be resolved by talk and discussion ("This is what I’m good at. And if I could change your mind ... I can change his, too."). This stems from a tendency to be far too trusting of strangers, giving them the benefit of the doubt, despite any warnings he might receive, whether it be the village warning against dragons or Stoick warning against Drago (Stoick: "Men who kill without reason cannot be reasoned with." / Hiccup: "I’m still going to try."). While sometimes correct in his judgement as he was with the dragons, his innate habit of trusting easily can sometimes leave him vulnerable to being deceived and manipulated, such as how he had been by some such as Heather and Mildew in the past.

It's this trust and assurance that often leaves him too reckless in his thinking, sometimes making impulse decisions. It's a continued trait of trying to prove himself, a habit he still holds from when he was younger, to try to prove his worth, whether as a Viking or as Stoick's son. Yet, trying to compensate for his insecurities often results in Hiccup getting himself into trouble. For instance, running off and ignoring his father's orders to once again pursue Drago leads to his confrontation with the mysterious dragon rider that separates him from Toothless. In an instant, Hiccup finds himself in a panic, that previous confidence suddenly shaken, as he finds himself in an unexpected high-pressured situation. These instances often leave him uncertain of how to react, sliding into a nervousness consisting of stuttering and stammering in his speech.

Yet, even dragged into a state where all is beyond his control, Hiccup still manages to display his immense sense of compassion. Despite being kidnapped with no awareness of what might be done to him, his worries focus less on his own circumstances and more on Toothless' safety ("Hey! You left my dragon back there! He can't fly on his own! He'll drown! We have to head back for my dragon!"). It's the same selfless compassion he displays in his first meeting with Toothless in which he was steps away from killing the defenseless creature, yet chooses to save his life and free him, despite the chances that he himself might be killed instantly afterwards ("I wouldn't kill him because he looked as frightened as I was. I looked at him and I saw myself."). The care he shows towards Toothless (though much more immense due to being his best friend) is the same he shows towards all dragons, constantly concerned for their safety and well-being.

Hiccup's relationship with dragons isn't the only one of its kind, shown when he discovers his own mother had been living alongside them for twenty years. Due to his nature to easily understand and sympathize with one's circumstances, he's quick to forgive her for having stayed away for so long, and instead chooses to celebrate the realization that many of his traits come from Valka herself. Feeling much more comfortable with his own self after becoming aware of their similarities, he's able to discuss his adventures of flight and the mutual understanding of feeling free while in the air, things he never felt could ever really be understood by his father or anyone else. Invited by Valka to join her (Valka: "We’ll unlock every mystery, find every last species, together, as mother and son."), Hiccup begins to consider that by now knowing who is his mother is, knowing that they share so much in common, he might have found that answer he had been searching for as to what he's truly meant for (Valka: "This gift we share, Hiccup ... it bonds us. This is who you are, son. Who we are. We will change the world for all dragons! We will make it a better, safer place!" / Hiccup: "That sounds ... amazing.").

However, beyond being like his parents, Hiccup has qualities that stand out stronger than in either of them, such as specifically his immense envelopment of hope. Perhaps too naive in his predictions, Hiccup will often believe things will constantly work out for the best, sometimes failing to see the possible mishaps that could occur. Meeting his mother, who soon reunites with his father, leaves him automatically believing that the family coming back together will provide plenty of a defense to handle any further obstacles, rambling on as he often does when overly excited ("And once you move back in, with all of your dragons, Drago won’t even stand a chance. Everything will be okay!"). Thrilled and almost on the verge of tears from the sheer happiness between his parents being together again, the last words he hears before his canon point (Stoick: "Thank Odin you didn't listen to me, son. We never would have found each other.") simply amplifies that glimmer of hope he constantly holds that everything works out well in the end.

The canon point he comes from holds great importance because it prevents Hiccup from experiencing once of the more traumatic experiences of his life: the death of his father. Because he continues to be adamant about trying to talk peace with Drago, his confrontation with the man results in Stoick rushing in to protect his son from a plasma attack by a controlled Toothless, an event that once again leaves Hiccup in a panicked state, crying and screaming. Though Hiccup will not have experienced this from his canon point, the effect it has on him, leaving him hopeless and ashamed in himself for never being able to meet his father's expectations, is mirrored in his past when Stoick first finds out that Hiccup had been training dragons, still the Vikings' enemies at the time (Stoick: "You've thrown your lot in with them. You're not a Viking. You're not my son."). In both cases, Hiccup feels he's lost everything, including his father and dragon, proving himself to be a major disappointment, and it takes the words of another (Astrid in the first, Valka in the second) to provide some encouragement and make him come to his senses and regain his confidence (Valka: "But your father ... he never doubted. He always said you’d become the strongest of them all."). His father's sacrifice also reveals Hiccup's true feelings about why he had avoided accepting becoming chief all along ("I was so afraid of becoming my dad. Mostly because I thought I never could. How do you become someone that great? That brave? That selfless? I guess you can only try."), fears that he had always felt but was too stubborn to ever truly admit until it was too late.

After rediscovering his resolve, the final battle simply shows proof of how Hiccup is willing to toughen his motives and go to further extremes to protect those he cares for. The harm that's been done to Toothless and the tragedy that happened to his father are more than enough to persuade him to put aside his diplomatic tendencies and engage in battle to defend Berk ("A chief protects his own."). Without fear or hesitation, he goes to high extremes, making daring and risky maneuvers in the air with Toothless in order to achieve victory, another parallel to his determination five years prior in the battle against Red Death where he had risked his own life to keep the villainous dragon away from the others, losing his leg in the process. However, it's this final battle that gives him the final push to accept the responsibilities of chief, a position he has long been more than capable of handling, but at his point in time, has not yet been able to gain the willingness to take up the title.

Overall, Hiccup can be identified for his sarcasm and bluntness, owning an immensely dry sense of humor that can occasionally get him into arguments with others. But from the moment he could talk to being a full grown young man at twenty, Hiccup's used his jokes and banter as a sort of defense mechanism to conceal and make up for his insecurities and his actual fears. It comes along with his tendencies to show off his actual talents and achievements, such as winning dragon races without much difficulty and demonstrating his flight suit and gliding maneuvers whenever he has the chance ("It’s all well and good to call yourself a dragon. But can you fly?"). He even begins to bask in showing off being a dragon rider, often times enjoying the reactions that come when he ventures around with Toothless ("No, this was different. Not the standard run-for-the-hills hoo-ha I’ve come to enjoy."). But while sometimes he may come off as rude and cocky, Hiccup never actually means harm and will actually show sympathy or generosity, such as letting Snotlout win the Thawfest games despite his own lead or scoring points into Astrid's basket during dragon racing. He's never completely above admitting when he is wrong either, even if his stubbornness will make it difficult to reach that point, but if it comes to somehow harming others, Hiccup is always willing to apologize and try to correct things.

SKILLS.

The one-legged Viking also has immense talents as a blacksmith. Having been seen as too scrawny and weak to go out on the battlefield, it was thought best to keep Hiccup indoors where he could avoid causing any trouble, leaving him to become Gobber's apprentice in the forge. He's there that he learned how to make sure of his actual talents and skills, training to be able to come up with his own designs and inventions. While first making attempts to build weapons to fight off the dragons, when he comes to terms that fighting isn't his preference, he finds more success in designing and creating things of the more useful sort, such as buildings and contraptions that help benefit the village in living alongside dragons ("We have custom stables, all-you-can-eat feeding stations, a full service dragon wash. Even top-of-the-line fire prevention, if I do say so myself."). He's also shown his skills in creating and sewing clothing, having first made a rider's vest when beginning to ride Toothless and eventually creating his famous flight suit, having many useful attachments (spare sheets of blank pages, a compass, and a sheath for a small knife to name a few), as well as leather wings to help him glide in the air with Toothless.

Work as a blacksmith is made easier by his impressive observation skills, such as how he manages to create a tail and saddle for Toothless based on studies of understanding the dragon anatomy and flight skills. He also continues to observe dragons in order to create "Inferno", a fire sword that makes use of Monstrous Nightmare saliva and Hideous Zippleback gas to convince dragons he means them no harm ("Once they see you as one of their own, even the testiest dragons can be trained, right, bud?"). Yet despite making a weapon, which he does hold out in self defense on occasion, he never actually makes use of it in battle, never once using it to harm anyone, confirming Hiccup's eagerness to avoid violent confrontations.

RELATIONSHIPS.

While Hiccup is one man, he can hardly ever be discussed without the inclusion of Toothless by his side. What had begun as an unexpected meeting of enemies, became a forbidden friendship that blossomed into inseparable brotherhood. Taking responsibility for causing Toothless to lose his tail fin, Hiccup took it upon himself to make sure the dragon had the chance to fly again. In doing so, it developed an immense bond of trust between the two, with Toothless being unable to fly without a rider, and when Hiccup later falls in battle, the Night Fury gives everything to save him, keeping the Viking from losing his life despite losing his leg. But its these injuries that shows one aspect of the colossal partnership they share. Even when Toothless becomes the cause of Stoick's death, albeit through the control of the Bewilderbeast, while Hiccup initially pushes the dragon away in anger, it's mere seconds later that he panics with worry when Toothless is taken away by Drago. Despite losing his father, Hiccup's faith in Toothless never truly falters, never placing the blame on him, and gives everything to bring the dragon back to his senses ("It wasn't your fault, bud. They made you do it. You’d never hurt him. You’d never hurt me. Please. You are my best friend, bud. My best friend."). Any successes or achievements, any positive changes, Hiccup will insist he owes it all to Toothless.

But Toothless isn't the only one. Ever since Berk transformed into a village of dragon riders, Hiccup's had the support of many of his friends, most notably his girlfriend of five years, Astrid. While Hiccup can be quite blunt, Astrid can sometimes be even more so, calling him out on his mistakes and faults without hesitation. Her straightforward and honest nature towards him helps him catch on to things he might need to correct or rethink, often times calling him to his senses, trying to make him realize things that even he can't seem to figure out ("What you're searching for ... isn't out there, Hiccup. It's in here. Maybe you just don't see it yet."). Even when they're apart, Astrid constantly believes in the best of him, knowing the depths of how much he cares for others and has the true qualities of a leader ("He’s only the son of Stoick the Vast ... his heir to the throne of Berk ... and the greatest dragon master this world has ever seen!"). It's support that he needs, always being dependent on the encouragement of others, and with Astrid, he's always sure that she'll have his back at any given moment. It's also through her that he displays examples of how much less shy and more confident he's become. Beginning with nervous, awkward pecks initiated by Astrid that often resulted in avoidance of eye contact, as years went back, it eventually led to him grasping her in his arms himself and bringing her in for kisses with no hesitation.
